Filtering

Disclosure certificates issued after 29th May 2013 will no longer show certain old and minor offences. A conviction will no longer be shown on a Disclosure certificate if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • It has been 11 years or more since the conviction was given (5.5 years if the person was under 18 when convicted).
  • It is the person's only offence.
  • It did not result in a custodial sentence.
  • It is not on the list of offences which will never be filtered.

The list of offences which will never be filtered is quite long and comprehensive, and is available on the DBS website. If a person is convicted of any of these crimes, that conviction will always appear on a DBS certificate, regardless of how long it has been or any other factor.

A caution will no longer be shown on a Disclosure certificate if it has been more than 6 years since it was given (2 years if the individual was under 18 when the caution was given), unless it is on the list of offences which will never be filtered, in which case it will remain on the person's record for life.
